Where is Darfur?
Darfur is an area in the westernmost region of Sudan, a country in Northeast Africa. Sudan is the largest country on the Afrcian continent and 10th largest in the world. Darfur is approximately the size of France and has a desert/semi-arid climate.
Since 2003, in Darfur there has been fighting between Darfuri rebels and the janjaweed militias, backed by the Khartoum- based central government. The rebels who began by protesting extreme neglect by the government and are now fighting for the existence of the Darfuri people.. Over 300,000 are estimated dead and the US government has declared it a genocide. United Nations reports are conservative at 200,000 dead, humanitarian groups state the figure as high as 450,000. The Sudanese government places the figure at 9,000. Over 240,000 refugees have fled to camps in Chad and 2.5 million are initernally displaced in The Sudan.
